Last night was the critical Round 16 BEST League encounter between White City Woodville and Modbury Jets at Frank Mitchell Park with only a point separating these teams who were bottom and second bottom respectively and as was expected it was a tight, close encounter. White City Woodville were slight favorites with the match being at their home ground, which has not been a happy hunting ground for Modbury in the past, but the match opened with both sides showing a caution realising just how important the match was. White City had the better of possession, but were unable to utilise it. Sam Farncombe got the first attempt on goal for the Jets and he was involved in the next main attack on goal just under ten minutes before the break where he flicked the ball through to Nathan Day who had a great chance, but White City goal keeper Nick Crossley was able to save it away. At the 41 minute mark a Modbury corner from Aaron Westervelt found Farncombe who pushed it back to Day and his shot was only denied by the crossbar but the ball came back and Rhys Devlin was able to slot the ball in giving Modbury a vital 1 - 0 lead. This remained the score until half time. The second half would show the more desperate team and the Jets were denied two real chances by the offside flag. At the 55th minute White City were given a penalty due to the ball making contact with a hand in the penalty area. Chad Bugeja just managed to get the ball passed Barney Smith to level up the match at 1 - 1. The next 15 minutes saw White City really take control and it was looking highly dangerous for the Jets. Some solid defence led by Todd McSorley and a bit of overdue fortune kept the scores level and Modbury worked their way back into the match. Late in the match a corner to Modbury saw a great delivery from Aaron Westervelt to Michael Menechella who snuck forward and found the header which gave Modbury the winning goal at the 85th minute. Unlike the teams' last meeting there was no last minute saving goal for White City and it was a courageous fighting performance from the Modbury Jets who now move up to 8th on the BEST League ladder.
