Modbury Jets - Adelaide Galaxy 2:2 (2:1)

Goals: 0:1 Adriano Iandiorio (23.); 1:1 Damian Harley (33.); 2:1 Nathan Day (36.); 2:2 John Fusco (66.)

Friday night was the Billy Gray Memorial match between Modbury Jets and Adelaide Galaxy and although the final score was a 2 - 2 draw it was enough for Modbury to retain the Trophy in honor of a true club legend.

The match opened up with Galaxy having the better of the play and using the ball better than Modbury and this became evident at the 23rd minute when the ball was not properly cleared away from defence and it ended up back with the Galaxy player who simply turned and slotted in the first goal. This seemed to fire up Modbury and they worked their way into the match taking more care and making better use of their possession. An excellent free kick taken by Aaron Westervelt was flicked on by several players in the penalty area before Damian Harley found the ball and put it in the net for the equalising goal at the 33 minute mark and giving the Modbury players a real feel of belief. This belief turned into reality shortly afterwards as Matt Kelly brought the ball forward up the wing before sending a great delivery to Nathan Day who took his opportunity beautifully giving Modbury the lead at 36 minutes. The score remained 2 - 1 until half time where the Modbury players left the field with an air of confidence and vocal support from the crowd.

The second half had Jets' supporters looking for more of the same positive play and although the Galaxy produced the first chance Barney Smith pulled off a great close up save and from here the match was in even balance until the 64th minute where a good run from Nathan Day was followed up by an offload to Louie Brain and his shot at goal had everyone beaten except the cross bar and Galaxy were able to scramble this away. From there Galaxy picked up a level and worked their way forward and with the assistance of some loose defence they managed to get the ball into the net equalising the match at the 66 minute mark. Galaxy then had better of the play, but a lot of this was due to several Modbury errors in the middle of the ground from poor offloading and rushing themselves, but it was not all one way traffic as Modbury created several of their own chances but could not finish them off. The match ended up in a 2 - 2 draw with both teams, especially the Jets looking back at what could have been.

Campbelltown City - Para Hills Knights 5:1 (3:1)

Goals: 0:1 Joel Allwright (Penalty, 1.); 1:1 Andrew Fowler; 2:1 Andrew Fowler; 3:1 Simon Catanzaro; 4:1 Michael Matricciani; 5:1 Andrew Fowler

At Newton Village Sports Complex, Campbelltown keeper Nigel Young had no recollection of the penalty he gave away inside the first minute of the clash against Para Hills Knights.

Young's Red Devils thrashed the Knights 5-1, but the young keeper was concussed and rushed to hospital before Joel Allwright converted a penalty to give Knights a shock 1-0 lead.

Veteran keeper Edward Scalzi kept a clean sheet as Campbelltown punished the Knights who were reduced to nine-men in the first half.

Andy Fowler jagged a hat-trick for the Red Devils while Michael Matricciani and Simon Catanzaro completed the rout after Campbelltown had taken a 3-1 half-time lead.

Cumberland United - Adelaide Blue Eagles 2:2 (1:1)

Goals: 0:1 Michael Pirone (Penalty, 22.); 1:1 Harry Skoumbros (43.); 2:1 Robert McDonald (Penalty, 79.); 2:2 Michael Pirone (85.)

CUMBERLAND United striker Robert MacDonald tucked away the penalty which handed the Foxes a brief lead in the 79th minute but it wasn't enough as Blue Eagles snatched a late goal six minutes later in an action packed 2-2 draw at Bailey Reserve on Saturday.

MacDonald who returned to the fray after an ankle injury said he was a little tentative before the match. ``I was a bit nervous about coming back,'' MacDonald said.

``I haven't really tested it at training and I've been trying to do some preparation with acupuncture and physios. ``But I felt good out there and it felt quite OK.''

Cumberland survived a late Blue Eagles onslaught after keeper Gino DeLucia was sent off for what appeared to be abusive language.

Cumberland was in the box seat to take maximum points but the home side's celebrations were cut short when Michael Pirone equalised.

It was the first draw of the season for Cumberland. ``Blue Eagles have always been tough,'' MacDonald said. ``It was quite a difficult game. ``I believe in going hard all the time.

``A 2-all draw is quite a fair result.''

MacDonald sang the praises of his teammates David Tassone and Jack Kirwin, who performed admirably against a stout opposition. ``David has been one of our most consistent performers,'' he said.

``And Jack was winning quite a few of the balls in the air. ``That was important because we were quite solid at the back.''

Cumberland's Harry Skoumbros scored the equaliser in the 43rd minute of the first half after Pirone opened the score for Blue Eagles from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute.

``Harry had quite a good game,'' MacDonald said. ``He just came back from honeymoon not so long ago. ``We've got a good mix of experience and youngsters.''

Pirone has now scored four of his six goals this season ironically against Cumberland after Blue Eagles beat the Foxes 2-0 in round one at the start of the Super League season.

The Foxes are just a point away from bottom-placed Modbury Jets, but the weekend's performance suggests that Cumberland could surge further up the ladder, MacDonald added.

Raiders - MetroStars 1:1 (0:0)

Goals: 0:1 Fabien Barbiero (52.); 1:1 Michael Paleka (82.)

10-man Raiders seemed to play better after keeper Robert Matosevic was sent off in the 56th minute of the clash in a 1-1 draw against MetroStars at the Croatian Sports Centre.

Matosevic's expulsion ignited a Raiders resurgence when Michael Paleka scored the equaliser in the 82nd minute. Fabien Barbiero scored Metro's opener in the 52nd minute.

Adelaide City - White City Warriors 2:1 (1:1)

Goals: 0:1 Robert Saraceno (20.); 1:1 Damian Mori (35.); 2:1 Damian Mori
