Goals: 0:1 Nathan Day (84.) Jets soar to score upset against Blue Eagles Val Migliaccio 29May07 MODBURY Jets caused an upset with a deserved 1-0 win over Blue Eagles at Marden Complex. Nathan Day scored the winning goal with a trademark half-volley after he intercepted a backward headed pass to fire home past stranded Blue Eagles keeper Gino DeLucia six minutes from time. Modbury had the home side on the ropes for most of the match after a man of the match performance from ex-Adelaide United midfielder Aaron Westervelt. Westervelt dictated the Jets midfield with an array of clever passes throughout the entire 90 minutes. Blue Eagles missed the calming influence of playmaker Michael Pirone who was the best man at a wedding with 18 year-old Josh Bosco stepping into the midfielder's shoes. After a nervous start Bosco held his own in the Blue Eagles engine room which was laden with five other players who are still in their teens. Suspended Blue Eagles player/coach Diego Pellegrini blooded the teenage brigade, which included Bosco, Kosta Terzis, Damien Crettenden, Adam Vizzari and Chris Atsibaksis. But it was the experience of the Jets which shone through with defenders Michael Menechella, Charles Marwe and keeper Barney Smith thwarting the limited Blue Eagles attacking thrusts. Fabian Bucco, however, almost opened the score for Blue Eagles in the second half but his effort cannoned against the base of the upright. Match Rport courtesy of City Messanger |
Goals: 1:0 Jason Trimboli (41.); 1:1 Angelo Arambatzis (42.) Adelaide Galaxy could only manage a point despite playing the last 10 minutes against 9 men. Ricardo Da Silva almost opened the scoring with a glancing header but a fine save from Robbie Matosevic denied him. Jason Trimboli gave Raiders the lead after firing in a free kick from outside the box, but Galaxy replied quickly through Angelo Arambatzis just before half time. Chance were scarse in the second half although Evan Gooding was relieved not to concede an own goal after the ball came back off the cross bar and hit him, only to roll out for a corner. Raiders lost Adam Mehicic and then Michael Paleka to red cards late in the game but Galaxy couldn't find a winner. Match Report courtesy of Adelaide Galaxy |
