Goals: 1:0 Konrad Kosnik (44.); 2:0 Loius Brain (Penalty, 54.); 3:0 Konrad Kosnik (59.) JETS TAKE OFF WITH A BLAST! Friday night saw a depleted Modbury Jets team take on the Raiders at Jet Park, Modbury and it was a surprising 3 - 0 victory to Modbury in front of a very good crowd. The first quarter of an hour was relatively even with some errors coming from both team, but then the Raiders took control for the next five minutes with opportunities arising from a corner and then a run down the line with a good ball over and a wide header. Modbury worked their way back into the contest and created some good spells of play before a break from Scott Wiedenbach saw him offload through to Russell Clayton who's shot was saved. At the 44 minute mark Jets' Captain Louie Brain won a hard ball in the middle of the ground and from there the ball was worked through to Konrad Kosnik and he got the ball passed the Raiders' goal keeper Robert Matosevic to give Modbury the lead. This was the first time Modbury had lead in the season so with the half time score at 1 - 0 there was plenty of reason to be confident, but more hard work was needed. The second half saw the Jets come out firing with an early run through from Louie Brain and unfortunately his ball was marginally too long so the Raiders avoided any danger from that. Not long after that a fine run from Scott Weidenbach lead to the ball being crossed over to Konrad Kosnik who was in the middle and he unselfishly touched the ball over to Todd McSorley who was clearly fouled in the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty to Modbury. The penalty was coolly put away by captain Louis Brain giving the home team a 2 - 0 lead at 54 minutes. As is well known in the sport a 2 - 0 score is probably the most dangerous score to have and the Modbury boys were obviously aware of this as Russell Clayton made a good run through the middle before offloading to Konrad Kosnik who found the back of the net at the 59th minute making it 3 - 0 to Modbury. From here the Raiders did apply some pressure but goal keeper Barney Smith was not going to let anything through and if he was out of reach of the ball there was a defender there to clear any danger. Both teams created slight chances from there but no further goals eventuated leaving the final score at 3 - 0. Modbury coach Duane Gray was especially pleased with the way that the team played together as a unit for the whole match and just did not give up and showed desperation to win, the pride which the Modbury shirt has been known for. Goals: 1:0 Paul Blefari (28.); 1:1 Elias Demourtzidis (63.); 1:2 Mimi Saric (78.); 2:2 Ivan Karlovic (Penalty, 90+4.) Red Devils squander points against MetroStars by Val Migliaccio 17Apr07 CAMPBELLTOWN City forward and skipper Elias Demourtzidis wasn't impressed after his side dropped two points when a dubious last minute penalty forced a 2-2 draw with MetroStars at TK Shutter Reserve on Saturday. Demourtzidis said Campbelltown threw away a certain come-from-behind victory before MetroStars defender Ivan Karlovic drove the spot kick home in the 94th minute. ``It's very disappointing,'' Demourtzidis said. ``We thought we did the right thing to try and kill the game off and the penalty was unfortunate. ``Whatever the referee saw I didn't see and he must have thought it was a handball. ``But they took their chance from the penalty spot.'' MetroStars teenage sensation Paul Blefari scored a stunning Super League debut goal in the 28th minute when his 30m cannon smashed into the top corner of the net to give his side a 1-0 lead. Demourtzidis squared the ledger in the 63rd minute when he found the back of the net from a clever 6m header after a perfect assist from Simon Catanzaro's precious left boot. Campbelltown took the lead in the 78th minute when Nathan Fleetwood was upended in the box. Demourtzidis stepped up for the kick but was foiled by a stunning save from MetroStars keeper Daniel Godley before Mimi Saric belted the rebound into the back of the net to give Campbelltown a 2-1 lead. Demourtzidis believes Campbelltown has the character to bounce back this weekend when the club hosts Modbury at Newton Village Sports Complex. ``We kept our heads up against MetroStars,'' he said. ``Soon the penny is going to drop but we were forced to make a few changes on Saturday and the young guys stepped up.'' Campbelltown has been be bolstered with the return to fitness of former Adelaide United striker Michael Matriccciani who was given 20 minutes in the derby on Saturday. Oliver Totani is also due to return to the first team after an long injury spell. ``Matrish (Matricciani) he's due to start a match,'' Demourtzidis said. ``I think he's ready to go and he's such a quality player.'' |
