JETS WASTE CHANCES

Friday night saw the first home match of the season for Modbury as they hosted a quality Metro Stars team at Jet Park , Modbury, but unfortunately for the hosts it was not the right outcome with a 3 - 1 loss although that score did not give a full reflection of the match.

The match e reasonably even and neither side really created any major chances apart from a couple of harmless headers on goal from Modbury. A fast counter attack from Metro Stars saw the Jets flat footed and a fine ball through to Ivan Karlovic saw him speed forward and coolly slot the ball past Barney Smith giving Metro Stars the lead at the 21 minute mark. Despite the goal the Modbury players did not drop their heads and kept working hard just lacking the final touch. An excellent run down the wing from Scott Weidenbach saw the ball get across to Chris Dean who touched it on for Russell Clayton and he found the back of the net making it 1 - 1 at the 32nd minute. The game appeared to be heading towards level terms at half time until a Metro Stars corner saw the ball cleared temporarily but a cracking overhead strike from Ryan Manolev hit the bar and bounced just inside the goal unluckily for the Jets leaving the score as 2 - 1 at half time.

The second half started with a great opportunity for Modbury with a ball through to Russell Clayton who flicked it over to Leigh Ramsden and he ran it in before offloading to Chris Dean who just needed a touch for it to go in, but somehow flicked it wide letting Metro Stars off the hook. The Jets continued to created more chances, but again and again were unable to give that final touch to find the net. At the 74th minute a Metro Stars corner found the head of David Menechella who flicked the ball in making it 3 - 1. Apart from a close up Metro shot well saved from Barney Smith there were not really any further chances for either team leaving the final score at 3 -1. Despite the score Modbury had probably more play, but couldn't take the chances and possibly if that chance at the 46th minute was taken it would have been a different story, but at the end of it all Metro Stars took their chances better and got the points. It was a much better and more committed Modbury team and more performances like that will see results come.

Campbelltown City - Adelaide Galaxy 0:0 (0:0)

Goals: None

Campbelltown City and Galaxy played out a dour 0-0 draw with the fear of losing seemingly high on the agenda at Newton Village Complex. Superb keeping from Red Devils young custodian Nigel Young kept Galaxy at bay while Galaxy's Julian Torresan had a quiet afternoon in goal. Torresan's only real scare arrived when Campbelltown's Matthew Deegan floated in a cross which the big keeper tipped onto the bar and out to safety in the second half.

Cumberland United - Para Hills Knights 0:3 (0:2)

Goals: 0:1 Mark Mulady; 0:2 Mark Mulady; 0:3 Matthew Cock

Adelaide Blue Eagles - Adelaide City 1:2 (1:0)

Goals: 1:0 Sam Farncombe (9.); 1:1 Paul Pezos; 1:2 Jonathan Negus (86.)

At the Marden Complex, Blue Eagles were just minutes away from snatching a valuable point from reigning champion Adelaide City. But young Black and Whites striker Jonathon Negus scored four minutes from time with a headed goal to give City its first win of the campaign after drawing 4-4 with Whiter City in round one. Blue Eagles, however, earned an early lead when Sam Farncombe found the back of the net in the ninth minute when he popped in a rebound from a blistering Gianluca Lagati thunderbolt. City skipper Paul Pezos equalized with a blistering 20m free kick in the second half before Negus broke the Blue Eagles' hearts with the winner.

Raiders - White City Warriors 2:1 (1:0)

Goals: 1:0 Fortunato Filletti; 2:0 Jason Trimboli; 2:1 Robert McDonald

RAIDERS coach Carl Maynard admitted to ``feeling the tension'' as his side beat arch-rival White City Warriors 2-1 in round two of the Super League at the Croatian Sports Centre on Saturday. Maynard said winning his first Super League match was a special feeling especially at home. ``Absolutely I was 110 per cent nervous,'' Maynard said. ``I'd be lying if I said otherwise. ``It's a good rivalry these days. ``Players just want to get out there and win.'' Maynard said despite youngster Fortunato Filletti and Jason Trimboli scoring goals to give his side a two goal buffer the Warriors came back strongly. ``Zoran (Karadzic, Warriors coach) started playing a 3-5-2 formation and they got back into the game,'' he said. ``Jason Trimboli ran himself into the ground, he's such a hard worker.'' Incredibly the two sides face off again on Wednesday at Frank Mitchell Park for an Errea Cup round two clash. ``It's hard to back it all up,'' Maynard said. ``We haven't got squads as big as Campbelltown or Galaxy and we have to blood our younger players. ``But I'm expecting another tough match.'' Maynard said the drinks flowed freely at the Croatian Sports Centre on Saturday night. ``I think it's a good time to enjoy the moment while we can,'' Maynard said.
